How To Choose the Right Balcony Privacy Screen

1. Materials Matter:

   - Bamboo and Wood: We don't sell these as they are high maintenance. They do have a great natural look when first installed. But they will need to be stained frequently to keep them looking this way. We aren't so keen on the stains which contain a lot of petrochemicals.

   - Canvas Screens: Lightweight and versatile, canvas screens are a popular choice for easy installation. They can be made with eyelets that can cabled tied in place. Look for UV-resistant materials to protect against harsh sunlight while maintaining privacy. We again don't sell these as they can be very noisy and have issues in strong winds and storms.

   - Recycled Plastics: Want the lushness of greenery without the upkeep? we love recycled plastic panels that plants can crawl and grow all over. They can provide dense coverage, offering a vibrant and maintenance-free solution that ticks all the privacy and environmental boxes. Not to mention they can transform a harsh space to place you will want to sit and relax in.
   - Aluminium Panels: For durability and a modern aesthetic, aluminium privacy screens are a great choice. They’re sturdy, decorative, and ideal for long-term use. They are powder coated in Colorbond colours and require little maintenance. At the end of their life they can recycled. For renters they can even be disassembled and taken to your next place.

2. Size and Fit:

Measure your balcony carefully to ensure the perfect fit. Many of our screens are customisable or come in standard sizes, making it easy to find one that meets your needs. Allow for a structure or frame to support the screen depending on the type of mount. Eg floor mounted or side mounted.

3. Easy Installation:

Renters and DIY enthusiasts will love our range of aluminium and recycled plastic screens. From freestanding designs to screens that can be secured with turnbuckle tensioners & cable or even zip ties, we have solutions that don’t require drilling or permanent fixtures.

4. Weather Resistance:

Look for weatherproof materials that can withstand our harsh sun, wind, and rain. Durable options like powder coated aluminium or uv resistant plastics will ensure your privacy screen lasts for years.

Balcony Privacy Screen FAQs

How to choose and install the right screen for your space.

What are the main types of balcony privacy screens and how do they differ?

There are various types of balcony privacy screens from canvas, bamboo, timber, aluminium and recycled plastics. We of course love the recycled plastic and the aluminium ones can be recycled at to other products at end of life. The problem with canvas is often they flap about in the wind and the timber screens can be expensive and require frequent re-staining.

How do I choose the right material for my balcony privacy screen?

The right material comes down to where the screen is going to be installed - what winds and sun it is exposed to, and how much maintenance you want to do. Aluminium and recycled plastics take less work. The best thing about the plastics is the ability to grow a vertical garden on the space using hanging pots.

Are balcony privacy screens good for reducing wind and noise?

They can be good for reducing wind but there are problems with reducing sound. If you use a canvas screen it will flap about, any screen with gaps between slats may whistle. The aluminium screens are best for reflecting noise but the overall reduction is minimal.

What are the best balcony privacy screens for small spaces?

Our favourite recommendation would be to install a recycled plastic balcony privacy screen. Then use this screen to be your fresh herb garden by using hanging pots. Ours are 4.4L with geofabric supplied, so give plenty of depth for roots and easy watering.

How do I install a balcony privacy screen without damaging the property?

The first thing is to get the right size screen. Measure carefully and don't buy anything until you are clear on how you are going to mount it. Consider options like will I cable tie this to existing structures like posts, or will I have to have this stand on it's own feet. You could make timber feet with vertical rods the height of the screen that sit inside a hole in the timber. Some of our vertical gardens are designed to be free standing. Some screens are designed to have brackets on the base of the posts that can be dyna bolted into concrete. The dyna-bolt hole will be left behind once screen is removed.
